My new song for my music video is-Callie Moore- Girl
I have decided to go with a completely new idea for a music video. I plan to have a performance based song with a narrative shown throughout the video.I have picked this idea and song because I think that more can be done in the music video due to the style of song, genre, pace and lyrics. The lead singer is a girl, so I plan to lip synch this song because I know the lyrics so hopefully it will look like I am actually singing. There is only one main instrument in the song which is a acoustic guitar, which I have easy access to, which should make the performance look more realistic. The song lasts 3:31, which is a reasonable length for a music video. The lyrics lead the idea behind the video which create the narrative structure to the video.
Genre
Acoustic Music - a music that solely or primarily uses instruments which produce sound through entirely acoustic means, as opposed to electric or electronic means
Setting
The narrative of the video will show a girl getting ready in her bedroom. The performance in the video will be in a studio, with lights to show this hopefully giving off a professional vibe.
Props
Because of the style and simplicity of the video and song, the main prop will be an acoustic guitar. The other props of importance used will only be the makeup brushes and scales.
Costumes
The 'girl' in the music video will be wearing a black revealing dress. The reason I chose black was because it is said that black is mean to make people look slim, which relates to the lyrics. The singer will just be wearing a plain t-shirt, nothing too extreme, purely because the song is very mellow so I think that wearing "loud" clothes will go against the style of the song.
Style
The video will mainly consist of performance, however aspects of narrative will be shown throughout the video to make it more entertaining to watch.
Target Audience
Because of the genre of music and because of the lyrics, this video will appeal more to women, however because of the Laura Mulvey male gaze theory, men may enjoy watching the video because the main person of importance is a female.
Story/Message of the video and song
My understanding of the lyrics is that it is about a woman who wants to be perfect and is anorexic, and the singer is explaining that this is wrong.Super models in all the popular magazines have continued to get thinner and thinner. Modeling agencies have been reported to actively pursue Anorexic models. The average woman model weighs up to 25% less than the typical woman and maintains a weight at about 15 to 20 percent below what is considered healthy for her age and height. Some models go through plastic surgery, some are "taped-up" to mold their bodies into more photogenic representations of themselves, and photos are airbrushed before going to print. By far, these body types and images are not the norm and unobtainable to the average individual, and far and wide, the constant force of these images on society makes us believe they should be. The video is quite full on and shows images of anorexia, I hope that this will shock the viewer and show them that in reality it is not glamorous. I will also show the singer portraying signs of disagreement with the anorexic lifestyle.
Artist image
I would like the singer to be portrayed as down to earth, mellow and a keen musician. The clothes that she will be wearing will be plain, so that people will focus more on the singer and that it shows that she isn't too appearance conscious.
Laura Mulvey male gaze theory
Laura Mulvey coined the term ‘Male Gaze’ in 1975. She believes that in film audiences have to ‘view’ characters from the perspective of a heterosexual male. In my video there will be a woman shown to be wearing a very revealing dress. The camera lingers on the curves of the female body, and events which occur to women are presented largely in the context of a man's reaction to these events. Relegates women to the status of objects. The female viewer must experience the narrative secondarily, by identification with the male.
Lighting
The lighting used in the performance will be reds and pinks so that it show femininity and also the red to represent the anger in the lyrics. The lights will be the stage lights in the drama room at my school. Because of the lighting, the rest of the room looks blank therefore you cannot tell that it is a classroom and it looks like a professional studio.
